Bluetooth Keyboard as Looper remote controller

Putting a bluetooth keyboard on the floor as a looper?:

Stating the obvious here - Bluetooth keyboards are pretty ubiquitous. More so than page turners, I'm sure. So it stands to reason that I could have the app interpret keyboard keypresses to trigger recording and playback, delete, rewind etc..

Lots of bluetooth keyboards to choose from

Get installed:

Head on over to splintersilk.com/muserevolve, sign up, if you haven't already. Then click Become a Tester and follow the instruction email from Apple.

How to:

First the Bluetooth keyboard is paired with the iOS device, which can be done using Settings. Here's Apple's guide for that.

Apple making Bluetooth as painless as possible

Then, within the app we can select the remote control via keyboard button.

Remote input selection towards the bottom of Muser Evolve's interface

In this state, whilst Muser Evolve is the app displayed and in focus, it will listen for key presses from the keyboard.

Hitting space will start a recording or play one back if a recording already exists.  For example, you may be holding a guitar, and you can tap the spacebar with your foot to start your recording, the moment you press it again you will hear back the recording in a loop. Effectively we are making a bluetooth keyboard looper!

Here is a video of me doing literally that:

What I didn’t show here, is the ability to press the left arrow key, to rewind the playback head. If this is done repeatedly during playback, it can emulate that well-known stuttering start effect.

Beyond that, if you press backspace or delete it will erase the recording preparing the app for you to record something new.

Like the Bluetooth Page Turner exploration, "press and hold" is still not really viable as I can't guarantee that these devices won't imediately return a key-release straight after key-press, or worse, a high-speed press/release cycle. You definitely don't want to be getting in on that action. Unfortunately that does still prevent me from getting a press and hold to work. Even so there is plenty of fun to be had here.

Conclusion:

As always, I welcome any thoughts on these adventures, so keep DMing or use the comment section to share you musings.
